AHA International, an academic program
of the University of Oregon, offers programs in Africa,
Latin America, Oceania and Western Europe. The Oviedo
program is sponsored by the Northwest Council on Study
Abroad, a consortium of thirteen public universities from
the Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The program is open
to all undergraduate students attending U.S. colleges
and universities.
With over 50 years of experience, AHA International
offers students, faculty members, and institutions opportunities
to develop intercultural competence through international
experience and education. Spanish language acquisition
and cultural immersion are the primary goals of this program.
In Oviedo students attend courses taught exclusively in
Spanish, live in home-stays with Spanish hosts, and participate
in an intercultural communications class. Students benefit
from this immersion to the local culture as well as the
extensive support services provided by AHA staff and visiting
faculty. Each of these components plays an important role
in helping us to achieve our goals.
Oviedo is located in the north of Spain and
is the administrative and cultural center of the Principado
de Asturias, one of the most culturally significant regions
in Spain. Surrounded by the city's impressive Old Quarter
and 400 year old University, students can experience historical
architectural sites as well as a contemporary music concerts,
theater and exhibitions. Oviedo is known as one of the
safest and cleanest cities in Spain and is an ideal location
to improve language skills as there are few English speaking
visitors in the region.
