The St. Lawrence University Program Abroad in Spain, established in 1967, is located at the Colegio Mayor Isabel de España in the Ciudad Universitaria in Madrid.
Students may participate in the program for the entire
academic year or for the fall or spring semester. After
an orientation period in Salamanca, fall and year students
spend the month of September living and working in villages
in the province of Segovia, each student in a different
village. During this time, students live with local families
and pursue a course of study oriented to life in the village.
Once a week the entire group meets with the program director
in the city of Segovia for a seminar. Spring semester
students have a similar program and stay in small towns
and cities in the province of Salamanca during January.
Fall term course work at the Colegio Mayor Isabel de
España in Madrid begins in October and ends in
December. During January and part of February, year students
undertake full time internships for which they receive
academic credit. Recent host organizations have included
a public school, an art auction house, an advertising
agency, a public relations firm, a brokerage, etc. Optional
internships are available to spring semester students
from mid-May through the last week in June.
Spring course work runs from mid February through mid May. All courses are given in Spanish by Spanish professors, most of them from the various facultades or schools of universities in Madrid. Year students may earn 9 credits for successful completion of the program. Fall semester students earn 4 1/2 units. Spring semester students also earn 4 1/2 units of credit and are granted an additional unit if they complete an internship.
The program provides a broad range of cultural activities,
including a variety of excursions within Spain, attendance
at plays and concerts and other extra-curricular activities.
Students are also reimbursed for many individually selected
cultural activities. Courses of special interest include
Nature and Culture in Spain and
The Madrid Stage.
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors from St. Lawrence and other colleges and universities are eligible to participate. Applicants should have three years of college Spanish or the equivalent, an overall 2.8 average and a B (3.0) average in Spanish. Fifteen to twenty students take part each year. Credit is granted by St. Lawrence University in the United States.
Students are housed in Madrid, as in the towns of as
in the towns of Segovia and Salamanca, in private homes,
one student per family. St. Lawrence believes that the
family experience can be one of the most rewarding aspects
of the program in Spain. For this reason, families are
carefully selected by the program resident director.
The comprehensive fee for the Program Abroad in Spain, which includes tuition, room and board, cultural activities, excursions and orientation is the same as the annual on campus comprehensive fee at St. Lawrence University. Applications should be submitted by February 28.
