The Sweet Briar Program accepts between 50 and 70 qualified students from accredited U.S. colleges and universities for study at the University of Seville. Preference is given to full-year candidates. A few students who are able to spend only the Fall or the Spring term in Seville are also accepted. All students must have completed the equivalent of five semesters of university level Spanish with an overall average of B. Their GPA must be minimally B-.***
After a three-week orientation period at "Los Geranios" which includes 50 contact hours of academic instruction in Spanish language, literature and culture as well as frequent excursions within Seville and to points of cultural, historical and artistic interest in Andalucía, students register for courses at the University of Seville, either in Cursos Para Extranjeros or in the Facultades de Filología and Geografía y Historia. It is possible for students to study in other Facultades such as Derecho, Economía and the Real Academia de Música.
Students are housed in carefully selected family settings. There are a limited number of housing situations in which students may do their own cooking. In all settings, tuition covers three meals a day and laundry. Every effort is made to match students interests and expectations with the appropriate Spanish living situation. To this end an extensive housing form is filled out by students once they have been accepted to the program.
The Sweet Briar Junior Year in Spain office is staffed by a full-time assistant to the director. She is in close contact with the director and with the two professors, from Filología and Geografía y Historia departments, who counsel the students on academic questions. The director spends five to six weeks in Seville at the beginning of each semester and again in late May and June to complete the academic year and organize housing and orientation for the coming year.
***Students whose level of language proficiency is below JYS standard but who would like to participate in Sweet Briar's JYS program, have the option to attend preliminary language intensive course of study lasting five weeks in Seville, Spain. This small group of students are provisionally accepted with the understanding that they complete the five weeks course of study before the JYS begins.
