Vanderbilt-in-Spain offers the opportunity to study abroad while maintaining the traditionally high academic standards of Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt students and other qualified undergraduates from U.S. institutions may spend one semester, a full academic year and/or summer at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The program is located in the Facultad de Filosof’a y Letras - B, which allows for ample contact with the university community. The program offers courses in history, language, literature, sociology and art each semester. Vanderbilt-in-Spain offers the student cultural field trips and visits designed to increase their appreciation of Spanish history and culture. The program is kept small (20-25 students per semester) in order to provide more personalized instruction. A unique feature of Vanderbilt-in-Spain is its tutorial program which puts our students in contact with Spanish university students.
Program fees per semester correspond to home campus fees. These include tuition, room and board in private homes, and some of the cultural activities mentioned above. Students normally receive 15-18 semester hours of credit (7 in summer session) directly from Vanderbilt University. The Pugh-Hernandez Award is available each semester.
Interested students must have an advanced intermediate knowledge of Spanish and sufficient academic standing to be accepted by Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt students undergo orientation before departure, and all program students receive further orientation in Madrid during the first month of the semester chosen. During the first month the students will take an intensive Spanish course to prepare them for the other courses.
