Returning to Spain

After spending an extended period of time studying abroad in Spain, many students will be curious how they can return to the country after they have graduated. Fortunately, there are many programs that offer scholarships and teaching grants for students wishing to return to teach english or futher advance their studies in Spain. There are several programs that students should investigate.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ASSISTANTS:

The Language and Culture Assistants program is coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, in collaboration with the Spanish Comunidades Autónomas (regions) and the educational authorities of the participating countries. It gives recent graduates an opportunity to visit Spain and become acquainted with the Spanish education system, teachers and students, while sharing with them aspects of your own language and culture. You may apply to go to any of the Comunidades Autónomas.

CIEE TEACHING PROGRAM:

If you are interested in working in a very cuturally stimulating southern part of Spain, Andalucia, CIEE might be the program for you. The program offers the opportunity to work with a Language and Culture Assistant program in public, bilingual schools. Under the guidance and supervision of classroom teachers, participants would work 12 hours a week and have the opportunity to teach students English, while absorbing the rich Spanish culture. There are different levels at which to teach, varying from children to adults, and the participant´s main job would be to stimulate an interest in the English language. Also, a compensation of 700 euros monthly would be given to participants.

FULBRIGHT PROGRAM:

The Fulbright Program is another valuable option to consider if you desire to return to Spain after graduation. It is the largest U.S. International Exchange Program and offers opportunites for students, professionals, and scholars to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Funded by the U.S. State Department, this program awards approximately 1,500 grants to U.S. students to study, do research, or assistant-teach overseas for one academic year. Students design their own programs which may include a multitude of things such as teaching, independent study, University coursework, and more.

CANTERBURY-TEFL TEACHING PROGRAM:

If you wish to teach Englsih in Madrid, the Canterbury-TEFL Program might be right for you. Upon completion of the Course, participants are guarenteed a teaching job for the academic year, with 40 paid practice teaching hours, 20 practice hours teaching English business, and 20 practice hours of teaching children. Participants will also receive an internationally recognized certificate.
