Middlebury College

One of the unique aspects of Middlebury College in Spain is the philosophy of guided independence - with support from staff, students have agency to personalize their academics, housing and cultural immersion, and create a learning and living abroad experience that best fits them. Middlebury offers one of only two U.S. programs in Madrid available for graduate study in Spanish language, literature and culture. MA in Spanish candidates may choose to specialize in Literature, Teaching Methodology, or Linguistics. Students in the MA in Applied Spanish program specialize in either Language Teaching, Migration and Development, or Cultural Heritage and Tourism Studies.

Classes for both graduate and undergraduate students are held from September to May at the Middlebury School in Spain headquarters at the Sede Prim in Madrid. Courses are taught by a distinguished group of scholars, including professors from Spanish universities and other experts in the fields of language, literature, history, the social sciences, and the arts. Middlebury in Spain offers a variety of undergraduate courses both at Middlebury’s center (the Sede Prim) in Madrid, and at partner institutions.

Undergraduate students may enroll directly in the Universidad Carlos III in Getafe (outside of Madrid), the Universidad de Córdoba, and the Universidad de La Rioja in Logroño. Students take 3 regular classes and one language class. Qualified undergraduate students from Middlebury College and other institutions are eligible to participate providing they have completed 5 semesters of college Spanish or its equivalent. Students may also apply for either the Fall or Spring terms, or study in Spain for a full academic year. Courses at the doctoral level are also available. Middlebury assists in finding a housing situation that is the best fit for the student. Options include placement with host families, residences/dorms, or finding an apartment.
