University of California-Davis Quarter Program

The University of California, Davis, offers a quarter study program at the ACCENT Study Center in Madrid, from April to June, open to students from the Davis Campus, as well as other campuses from the UC system and institutions of higher education. The program is composed of two levels: a Spanish language Track (Level 1) and a Humanities Track (Level 2). The Spanish Language cohort group come with no previous knowledge of Spanish language, and complete two intensive courses equivalent to first-year Spanish. The Humanities cohort students come having completed at least four quarters of Spanish language (or the equivalent), and enroll in three courses in Spanish art, literature, and film studies.

All students take a Spanish Civilization course and participate in an Intercultural Competence seminar (taught in English), for a total of 15 credits for Level 1 and 21 credits for Level 2. A Service Learning option is offered as language assistants at local semi-private primary and secondary schools in Madrid with an English curriculum. During the program, all students have the opportunity to attend lectures and performances by important personalities in the cultural and political life of Spain, which are offered by UC Davis and ACCENT. In addition, our program includes a series of field-trips to places of particular interest throughout Spain. All the field trips and many cultural activities in Madrid, as well as housing in Spanish private homes with host families, or in a local student residence, are included in the program fees.
