ABOUT CASA
CASA is a non-profit academic consortium of eleven leading comprehensive research universities formed for the purpose of organizing and delivering rigorous education abroad programs in collaboration with leading world universities.
CASA member institutions are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Melbourne, the University of Pennsylvania, and Vanderbilt University. CASA associate member institutions are Amherst College, Barnard College, Grinnell College and Swarthmore College.
From its inception, the intention of CASA is to go beyond traditional study abroad, harnessing the combined resources of its member institutions — world-renowned faculty and highly inquisitive students — to deliver full immersion opportunities that engage students with leading academics and thought-leaders around the world. Each Divisional Center has a fully operative physical presence in the host country, led by a permanent on-site administrative director and support staff.
The centers provide a rich academic environment for CASA students and faculty from across disciplines to engage with select international partner universities. CASA's focus is to provide profound learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom, engaging students locally through carefully programmed curricular and co-curricular activities that are delivered, wherever possible, in the target language.
CASA STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS IN SPAIN:
CASA CENTER IN GRANADA
The CASA-Granada Center is located in the very center of the city, in the UGR’s Palacio de la Jarosa Building, near the School of Translation and Interpreting, offering easy access to students enrolled in the various programs at the UGR & CLM.
CASA BARCELONA
The CASA-Barcelona program offers students an unmatched opportunity to hone their Spanish skills while studying alongside local students at four premier universities in the city. Students from all academic disciplines who have completed a minimum of five to six semesters of college-level Spanish (or the equivalent or two semesters of Catalan) are eligible to apply. Participants must take a combination of courses in Spanish offered through the CASA-Barcelona and the associated universities. All students take a CASA Pro-seminar, which includes academic and cultural activities throughout the semester (visits to museums, conferences, study trips and workshops). In addition, students take one of two courses designed specifically for CASA students, taught by the resident director and a US visiting professor from a CASA consortium university, or a professor from a local partner university. Students complete their course selection with other direct-enrollment courses taken at one or more of the four local universities in Barcelona, which offer a wide range of subjects taught in Spanish and/or Catalan.
CASA SEVILLA
CASA-Sevilla is a full immersion program that goes one step further into the community so that students truly get to know Spain and improve their Spanish. Over the semester or year, students: -Take university courses with local students -Explore history, culture and language through active learning in the classroom, around the city, and beyond -Get to know the community through engaged, project-based work -Live in a Spanish household Students take three classes at the Universidad de Sevilla, where they experience a new academic system and meet local students. They also select one course at the Program Center taught by local faculty or faculty from consortium-member institutions. In addition to guided explorations with tasks and discussions built into the program courses, CASA-Sevilla offers an array of cultural activities throughout the semester to enrich students’ experience of Spain and Sevillano culture. Students also do supervised work on local community organizations such as NGOs, local schools and neighborhood associations.
