The State University of New York offers a year abroad program in Madrid for undergraduate students seeking to enrich their studies in the heart of the Spanish culture and at the same time obtaining full University credit for their work. Students are admitted after having completed two years of college Spanish or its equivalent. They come from within and without the SUNY system, participating in the Program for one or two semesters, and obtaining up to 18 credits per semester.

Classes are held from September to May at the International Institute located at Miguel Angel, 8 which itself has a highly esteemed academic tradition. Native professors, internationally recognized in their particular fields of Hispanic studies, offer classes in literature, language, history, politics and other related fields. Qualified students may also enroll in one class at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Before classes begin each semester there is an orientation week to help the students become familiar with life in Madrid. Group excursions to other parts of Spain and cultural activities held throughout the school year are organized to give the students a practical experience of their studies. The SUNY office in Madrid helps students make their housing arrangements. Most of them live with Spanish families to help complete their overall Spanish experience. Tuition is the same as on the home campus to which housing and activity fees must be added.
